Mission Statement

House Mountain Review is an online literary journal that publishes innovative, aesthetically-diverse poetry and visual art. HMR welcomes works that explore various forms of difference, broadly defined, and that interrogate aesthetic conventions. We particularly encourage submissions by writers and artists from underrepresented perspectives and backgrounds.
House Mountain Review is named in homage to House Mountain in Rockbridge County, Virginia. Together its two peaks, Big and Little House Mountains, form a peerless landmark rising above the surrounding blue hills. In the words of Wallace Stevens, HMR is a place for poets to go their “own way,” but also to find their “unique and solitary” mountain homes. Like Stevens, we believe in the poem’s power to preserve, transform, and sustain new realities, and like its namesake, HMR aspires to be an outlook—an enduring reference point in the fields of innovative poetry and visual art.
